Wastnage
A family name
The surname Wastnage was first found in Leicestershire at Osgarthorp where Sir Philip de Wasteneys, inherited lands through marriage with Hardulph's great-granddaughter, Amphelis in the latter part of the twelfth century. The name originally known as Gastineys having derived from the district called the 'Gastinois,' lying to the south of Paris and east of Orleans in France.Descendants of Geoffrey II, Count of Gâtinais, were among the Norman noblemen to establish a presence in England following the invasion of 1066, led by William the Conquerer. The name de Gâtinais changed over time, with the circumflex being replaced initially with an S to become de Gastinais in the late Middle Ages. During the Renaissance, the noble prefix de was lost and the French G replaced by an English W to become Wastinais and later Wastenaye. The current spelling dates to around 1712 when a monk mis transcribed the letter y as a g to make Wastnage.
